The driver was "determined to be not at fault," authorities added.

Reed is survived by 10-year-old Tren Brown, her son with rapper Kurupt. Brandi Williams and Shamari Fears-DeVoe, her bandmates from Blacque (with hits like "808") mourned her loss in a joint statement released Saturday.

"We are devastated by the loss of our group member, sister and friend Natina Reed. Because of the enormous support of Blaque fans and our love for each another, Blaque officially reunited this fall and we were in the process of working on a new album and a reality show. Natina continuously embodied the pioneering spirit of Blaque and her undeniable creativity touched the hearts of fans everywhere. Natina was a mother, sister, accomplished songwriter, artist and friend. We ask for your prayers at this time for Natina's family. She will forever be missed and her global influence eternally felt. We thank God for the experiences we shared."

The Pitter Patter Of Rain Might Reveal a Bridge's Structural Integrity

Closing down a busy bridge for safety inspections is difficult because it can lead to traffic nightmares on either side. But at the same time, the last thing engineers want is for it to collapse with vehicles on deck. So a team of researchers has come up with a novel way to test a concrete bridge's structural integrity by simply listening to the sound of rain drops. More »

These Cruzerlite Plushies are awesome, and we're giving one away

Plushies

I am an Android nerd. I love little Android toys, figures, t-shirts, you name it. If it has Android on it, in it, or around it I'm all over it. I work all day in an office with no Xbox, why not fill it with cool toys, right? RIGHT?!?

Now I've got some new ones to collect, as the new Cruiserlite Android plushies are available from ShopAndroid. Super heros, pirates, even Big Android BBQs are well represented, and there's no way I can know that these are available and not have them. ALL of them.

I imagine I'm not alone, Slide those Bucky Balls over to the side, and make room for these jewels. We're giving one away at random in the comments, but you can also grab one (or all) of these 8-inch tall rascals at ShopAndroid for $19.95. Just keep them away from your dog!

Here's where you win one. Just comment below, and somewhere around midnight PT I'll pick a comment at random. I'm going to have to send you email through the site to find out where to send it, so make sure you have real details filled out on your user page. Just click your name in the upper right if you need to adjust anything,

Good luck!

Boeing's Counter-Electronics High Power ... - Business Insider

While the U.S. geared up for the second presidential debate last Tuesday, a building sat pulsing with computers, electronic surveillance, and security systems?in the Utah high desert.

The unoccupied site was awaiting the test of a weapon the Pentagon requested four years ago to the day on 16 October, 2008. ?

The?Counter-Electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP), led by Boeing's Phantom works, promised to change the face of contemporary warfare, and its test was a complete success.

CHAMP flew over the Utah Test and Training Range last Tuesday, discharging a burst of High Power Microwaves onto the test site and brought down the compound's entire spectrum of electronic systems, apparently without producing any other damage at all. Even the camera recording the test was shut down.

Struggling to contain his enthusiasm, Boeing's Keith Coleman says, "We hit every target we wanted to. Today we made science fiction into science fact."

Seattle PI

The test site as it progressed from waiting until camera shut down

Coleman spoke from a Boeing video (below) that shows the results of the test, inside the computer filled building. Flying over the largest testing range in the country, CHAMPS took out seven different targets?before self-destructing over empty desert.

While James Dodd, VP of Advanced Boeing Aircraft says he hopes to implement the CHAMP sooner rather than later, it's just one weapon in a growing arsenal meant to take down increasingly sophisticated foreign radar systems.

Passive radar?is being heavily marketed abroad as the system to use if a country wants to identify U.S. stealth planes including the forthcoming F-35. The passive system evaluates a wide spectrum of anomalies to track a jet, but a burst from CHAMPS, or the new active electronically scanned array (AESA) will render that threat useless.

Expect CHAMP or AESA or another radar jamming device on any missions involving those terribly expensive F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

Can I get a cash out refinance for home improvements if I have less ...

My husband and I?want to refinance soon.? We bought our home in 2008 for $311,000 and have made several improvements.? Based on similar local sales, I believe it will appraise for around $320,000 now.??We currently owe about $278,000, so?we do not have 20% equity.??We would also like to finish?the basement, which I am estimating will cost about $20-$25k, or possibly less, because we?are willing to?do some of the simpler work ourselves (painting, etc.).??What are?the options?? Can?we do a cash out refinance???We are?already paying PMI, so what are the pros/cons of?cashing out on?a first?mortgage, if we are eligible?? Do any lenders look at the estimated value after improvements for the refinance?? Would we be better off?refinancing the first, then getting a second for the improvements, or would we even qualify for?a loan like this?? (Our credit scores are in the 750 range,?debt ratio is less than 20% with mortgage, and we have 4 and 18 years with current employers.)

Emir of Qatar visits Gaza, pledges $400 million

The Emir of Qatar has become the first head of state to visit Gaza since the Islamist group Hamas seized control five years ago. The visit reflects increasing ties between the Gulf state and the regime which is considered a terrorist group by the West.? Lindsey Hilsum Channel Four Europe reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated 4:10 p.m. ET -- DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The emir of Qatar embraced the Hamas leadership of Gaza on Tuesday with an official visit that broke the isolation of the Palestinian Islamist movement, to the dismay of Israel and rival, Western-backed Palestinian leaders.

Israel said it was "astounding" that Qatar, a U.S.-allied Gulf state whose oil and gas permit it to punch way above its diplomatic weight, would take sides in the Palestinian dispute and endorse Hamas, branded as terrorists in the West. The emir had "thrown peace under the bus," an Israeli spokesman said.

But some analysts saw a daring move, aimed at rehabilitating Hamas in Western eyes in order to coax it into the peace camp at a time of Arab Spring revolts and civil war in Syria, have been reshaping power balances across the Middle East.

Mohammed Abed / Pool via Reuters

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh welcomes the Emir of Qatar Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, right, to Gaza at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on Oct. 23.

The emir, who is rare among Arab rulers in having met senior Israeli officials, denounced Israel's policies and praised people in Gaza for standing up to it with "bare chests" -- but he also urged rival Palestinian leaders to abandon their feuds.

The emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa?al-Thani, who has led Arab efforts to support rebels in Syria and Libya during Arab Spring revolts, left Doha with a large delegation and was welcomed with a red carpet. Among those traveling with him were?his wife, Sheikh Moza, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassim and other ministers, the official Qatar News Agency reported.?

Hundreds of Palestinians lined his route, waving Palestinian and Qatari flags as the emir's black Mercedes limousine bumped along the rutted main highway Qatar has promised to rebuild.

"Today we declare victory over the blockade through this historic visit," Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told the Qatari monarch in a speech at the site of a new town to be built with the emirate's money. "Thank you emir, thank you Qatar, for this noble Arab stance. ... Hail to the blood of martyrs that brought us to this moment."

Hamas, whose suicide bombing campaign against Israel was at a peak a decade ago, rejects a peace treaty and has poured scorn on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, of the rival Fatah movement, for his efforts to negotiate his way to a Palestinian state. That peace process with Israel is stalled.

Mohammed Abed / Pool via EPA

Qatar's first lady, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al-Missned, left, walks alongside the wife of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, during a welcome ceremony at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

Sheikh Hamad slammed Israeli settlement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. "The Palestinian cause ... remains a bleeding wound in the Arab body as Israel continues every day to change the face of Palestinian land through its settlement activities and Judaisation in the occupied West Bank and especially in Jerusalem," he told an audience at Gaza's Islamic University.

But he blamed some of the failure on Palestinian infighting, which had undermined "resistance." "Surely you realize that your division is the source of greater harm to your cause and the cause of all Arabs," he said. "It is time you end the chapter of differences and open a wide chapter for reconciliation."

"This visit has great political significance," said Hamas government spokesman Taher al-Nunu, according to AlJazeera.com. "[The emir] is the first Arab leader to break the political siege."

Gaza, under partial blockade by Israel and Egypt, has no airport or seaport, and the Qatari delegation is believed to have entered by land from Egypt.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said he welcomed the emir's visit to Gaza, according to a late night statement from his office quoted by AlJazeera.com.

US, Israel ready for huge joint drill in Iran's shadow

This was the first visit to Gaza by any national leader since Hamas seized control of the enclave where 1.7 million people live from Abbas's forces in 2007. Israel had pulled out its troops and settlers from the territory two years earlier.

Qatar has called the visit a humanitarian gesture, to inaugurate reconstruction projects financed by the emirate. After initially earmarking $250 million for the schemes, a smiling Haniyeh announced the fund now stood at $400 million.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States was concerned about the "destabilizing" role of Hamas in the region.

"The Qataris have described this as a humanitarian mission," she said. "We would hope that the opportunity was taken to make clear the importance of Palestinians and Israelis talking to each other."

Ibraheem Abu Mustafa / Reuters

Hamas security forces sit between posters of senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, left, and Qatar's Emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who is set to visit the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. He will be the first head of state to enter the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The visit will not include a meeting with Abbas, whose authority extends over the West Bank. The emir notified Abbas of his visit in a phone call on Sunday, according to the Jerusalem Post.

More Middle East & North African coverage on NBCNews.com

?We can?t welcome the visit of the emir and his wife to the Gaza Strip,? political analyst Adel Abdel Rahman, who is affiliated with Fatah, told the paper.??The visit does not serve the unity of the Palestinian territories, the people and the political system. On the contrary, the visit poses a threat to unity and our political system.?

Western-allied Gulf Arab states are trying to lure Hamas away from its alliance with Iran, whose nuclear energy program has raised the prospect of a war with Israel.?

Israeli forces strike Gaza targets after rocket salvo

Israel and Gaza are in a state of perpetual low-level conflict, marked by sporadic rocket attacks from Gaza by Islamic militant groups and air strikes by the Israeli forces.

Combined pesticide exposure affects bumblebee colony success

Monday, October 22, 2012

Individual worker behaviour and colony success are both affected when bees are exposed to a combination of pesticides, according to research conducted by Dr Richard Gill and Dr Nigel Raine at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This research, published in Nature, investigated social bumblebee colonies which rely on the collective performance of numerous individual worker bees. It showed that chronic exposure to two commonly-used pesticides (a neonicotinoid and a pyrethroid), at concentrations approximating field-level exposure, impaired natural foraging behaviour and increased worker mortality. This led to significant reductions in colony success, and increased rates of colony failure.

Bees are typically exposed to numerous pesticides when collecting pollen and nectar from crops, and this is the first study to examine the potential effects of exposure to a combination of pesticides under realistic field conditions.

While recent studies have investigated the role of pesticides on either individual bee behaviours, or the impact on whole colonies, how changes to individual behaviour could have knock-on effects for the colony has not previously been shown.

Dr Raine said: "There is an urgent need to understand the reasons behind current bee declines as they are essential pollinators of many agricultural crops and wild flowers. We rely on these insects to produce most of the food we eat and maintain the landscapes we enjoy".

"Previous studies investigating the possible role of pesticides in current bee declines have focused on honeybees, but it is also crucial that we understand how pesticides affect other bee species," added Dr Gill.

This study mimicked realistic scenarios in which 40 early stage bumblebee colonies received four-week exposure to two pesticides that are frequently encountered when foraging on flowering crops: the neonicotinoid 'Imidacloprid' and the pyrethroid 'lambda-cyhalothrin'.

Imidacloprid was provided in a sucrose solution at levels that could be found in nectar and lambda-cyhalothrin was administered following label guidance for field spray applications. Bees were able to forage in the field providing a realistic behavioural setting, and the foraging behaviour of individual workers was recorded using radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging technology.

The researchers found that bees exposed to imidacloprid were less able to forage effectively, particularly when it came to collecting pollen. This meant treated colonies had less food available to them, so could not raise as many new workers. On average, the percentage of workers leaving the colony and then getting lost was 55% higher in those receiving imidacloprid than those that were not exposed to pesticides. The results of this study also indicate that combinatorial exposure to pesticides increases the tendency of bee colonies to fail.

Dr Gill commented that: "The novelty of this study is that we show how the sublethal effects of pesticide exposure affects individual bee behaviour with serious knock-on consequences for the performance of the colony as a whole".

Dr Raine added: "Policymakers need to consider the evidence and work together with regulatory bodies to minimize the risk to all bees caused by pesticides, not just honeybees. Currently pesticide usage is approved based on tests looking at single pesticides. However, our evidence shows that the risk of exposure to multiple pesticides needs to be considered, as this can seriously affect colony success".

Home ? business ? Finance officials troubled by massive farm scheme debts call for changes

Suphannee Pootpisut
The Nation October 22, 2012 1:00 am

The ministry recently reported to the prime minister the cost of 15 farm pledging projects since 2004, the source said.

The ministry officials led by deputy |permanent secretary Supa Piyajitti, who |is in charge of evaluating the price sup-|port schemes, suggested the government |to repay debt worth Bt200 billion to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives(BAAC), which had advanced payments to scheme recipients on behalf of the government.

The government may take five years to fully pay off its debt to the BAAC, the source said.

The ministry also suggested the government revise the pledging conditions to cut costs and prevent corruption, the source said.

Since 2004, past governments and the current government have implemented pledging schemes for 48 million tonnes of farm products from farmers, mainly rice.

These projects yielded revenue of Bt205 billion against costs of Bt412 billion, the source said, so the net loss so far is Bt206 billion.

The cost is expected to rise further as the government continues to buy crops from farmers at much higher prices than the |market.

As of May, the government's farm product inventory was Bt121 billion and its cost for storing rice was Bt33 billion.

The BAAC has had to pay out to farmers a total of Bt450 billion for the 15 price-|support schemes, but has received only Bt198 billion in compensation from the government so far, or less than half of the total cost.

Due to rising cost, the Finance Ministry proposed to the Commerce Ministry and the National Rice Policy Committee to report the cost every quarter.

To make the rice pledging scheme sustainable, the government needs to review the way it buys rice from farmers. The price should not be too much higher than the market, according to officials. The government promises to buy unlimited rice from farmers at an average price of Bt15,000 per tonne of unmilled rice.

The government was also urged to limit the quantity of rice that it will buy from farmers, as the open-ended policy has led to overproduction of rice and other farm products, officials said. For example, now farmers plant seven crops in each two-year cycle, up from five previously.

Since the government now has a monopoly in rice trading, it has distorted the market mechanism. Exporters and millers cannot buy rice at a reasonable price for trade. A few of them can win rice at government auctions, but that is because they have an unfair advantage over others, officials said.

The price support scheme also makes Thai rice more expensive than rivals' rice in the world market, leading to shrinking market share.

The scheme has also encouraged smuggling, as farmers in Asean countries can get higher prices by selling their rice to Thais.

The government should also consult with other agencies on conducting a comprehensive appraisal of the price support schemes to determine if they should be continued or changed, they said.

Congressman calls for hearings on veteran deaths in response to

A member of the U.S. House Committee on Veteran Affairs is calling for congressional hearings in response to a series of American-Statesman articles that revealed an alarming number of Texas veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are dying of prescription drug overdoses and that the Department of Veterans Affairs is failing to adequately track the deaths of recently returned troops.

U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, R-Waco, said he would ask committee chair Jeff Miller, R-Florida, for hearings on the VA?s response to the prescription drug overdoses and on the latest research into post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

?The prescription drug overdose problem really bothers me a lot,? Flores said. ?I would like to get a handle on that.?

While the issue of veteran suicide has received considerable national attention, the Statesman investigation showed that nearly as many Texas veterans are dying of prescription drug overdoses ? and in many cases received powerful narcotic painkillers from VA doctors. According to toxicology reports obtained by the Statesman, most veterans who died of overdoses had multiple prescription drugs in their systems when they died.

The House Committee on Veteran Affairs regularly holds hearings on veteran issues; in 2007 and 2008, its members ordered the VA to provide better data on suicides among veterans after CBS News reported alarmingly high numbers of veteran suicides, which the agency initially sought to suppress.

Despite the attention the VA now gives to suicides, it has yet to publicly release a comprehensive study of how Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are dying. Critics say that without such a complete investigation into all causes of death, the VA does not have a full picture of the problems facing recent veterans.

Because it doesn?t track individual causes of death, the VA was unable to confirm the Statesman?s specific findings or determine whether they represent national trends. The VA is planning to conduct more mortality studies at the end of the year, but it?s unclear whether the agency will provide a full breakdown of how veterans are dying.

?We will be pushing them for a comprehensive study, absolutely,? Flores said. ?We?ll get the ball rolling.?

The VA faces several data limitations that make compiling such information difficult: it relies on the National Death Index for causes of death, but the file is hampered by a two-year time lag. And death certificates, including those in Texas, only reveal whether the deceased has ever served in the armed forces ? which means active-duty service members are mixed in with veterans. Death certificates also can underreport suicides and drug overdoses, experts say.

And while the CDC?s National Violent Death Reporting System can identify veterans who die from suicide or other violent causes, only 18 states make reports to the system. The CDC estimates that expanding to all 50 states would cost $25 million, which Congress has not appropriated.

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, said through a spokeswoman that he would support an effort to give the CDC the necessary money.

?The Statesman?s insightful articles raise many troubling issues. My office is continuously working with veterans on a wide range of needs. The VA was too slow in recognizing this serious problem and then too slow in responding to it,? Doggett said in a statement.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, sent the Statesman?s series to U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and U.S. Secretary of Veteran Affairs Eric Shinseki to ask how they would improve tracking, analysis and prevention of veterans deaths.

?Sen. Cornyn believes we have an obligation to all veterans to do everything in our power to honor their service, take care of their families and prevent fellow veterans from facing similar tragedy,? a spokeswoman for his office said.

The Statesman obtained autopsy results, toxicology reports, inquests and accident reports from more than 50 agencies throughout the state to analyze the causes of death for 266 Texas veterans who served in operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and were receiving Department of Veterans Affairs disability benefits when they died. More than one in three died from a drug overdose, a fatal combination of drugs or suicide. Their median age at death was 28 . The problems were even more severe among veterans with a primary diagnosis of PTSD: 80 percent died of overdose, suicide or a single-vehicle crashes.

The presence of a trainee during endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) may have negative implications, including increased procedure time and complications. Researchers from the University of Calgary retrospectively reviewed 607 EBUS procedures, of which a trainee was present for 512. Significant differences were seen when a trainee was present vs when no trainee was present for procedure length (58.32 vs 37.69 min) and for the dose of propofol used (178.28 vs 137.11 mg). In addition, more complications were seen in the trainee group (24 vs 1). This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Students, profs. debate effects of debt forgiveness | The Daily Free ...

While a report by the New America Foundation said the intended changes to President Barack Obama?s administration?s student debt-relief plan might not benefit all borrowers, a number of Boston University students and professors said they still believe the plan will be effective.

Borrowers pay 15 percent of their discretionary income and the remaining balance with accrued interest is forgiven after 25 years of payment. The Obama administration aims to change this policy to ask for 10 percent of the borrower?s discretionary income and forgive balances after 20 years.

However, Alex Holt, co-author of the report released Tuesday, ?Safety Net or Windfall?? said the Income-Based Repayment plan disproportionately helps some borrowers when he studied what happens to a borrower during the entire repayment period.

?If this new policy goes into effect, it will disproportionally help high-income borrowers, people who are making a lot of money,? Holt, a Federal Education Budget Project program associate, said. ?Our question is, ?Is that the best way to appropriate federal funds?? Should federal funds be going to the wealthiest earners in the country, or should it be going to borrowers who are struggling the most.?

The report offers recommendations to alter the policy to redistribute the relief to those who need it.

?We?re trying to take what we think is the intent of the law, which is to help struggling borrowers,? Holt said. ?We want to keep those policies in place to help those struggling borrowers, but we want to make sure people who can pay back their loans in full, do.?

Holt used the example of an attorney making $200,000 a year. After the attorney is out of school and working for 25 years, he or she might have $100,000 left to pay back. At that point, the debt is forgiven even though he or she could potentially pay it back, Holt said.

?It hurts the taxpayer because they are basically subsidizing wealthy people,? he said.

The Obama administration?s new plan will benefit anyone with a student loan, no matter the size of the loan, said School of Management Professor Mark Williams.

Williams said focusing on the size of the loan is missing the point of the financial relief plan.

?College students when they get out, they?re not going to be strapped,? Williams said. ?Instead of having a 15-percent requirement of their income going to pay the student loan, 5 percent more is going to be available for other things.?

The distribution is not as disproportionate as the report claims, he said. The high-income borrowers will pay more in taxes because they are making more and, in a sense, they will be paying back for that advantage.

Williams said the plan gives an incentive for more students to continue to graduate school.

?The positive is this is a greater incentive for students to want to go to graduate school,? he said. ?If they go to graduate school, they make more money. If they make more money, more debt to get to this higher income producing status will be extinguished.?

Cathie Jo Martin, a political science professor, said this distribution of wealth is not different from what often happens to lower-income classes.

?The use of the tax code to achieve social purposes in America has resulted in many benefits being distributed to the upper-income and middle-income classes,? Martin said.

She said the Obama administration is attempting to give lower-income students the opportunity to loan access.

?Obama is trying to reform the system of Pell grant so that more lower-income students can have access,? Martin said. ?I think he has expanded access.?

College of General Studies sophomore Arlene Garcia said the plan is beneficial as long as everyone gets an equal opportunity to have the same assistance.

?But I don?t think they should penalize people for earning more money,? Garcia said.

Garcia said it would not be fair for the government to ask high-income borrowers to pay their loans in entirety when others get their balances forgiven.

?It being ?forgiven? doesn?t really mean that it?s forgiven,? said Alex Keiser, an SMG junior. ?Somebody still has to pay the bill, which means then it?s just the taxpayers or someone else and, I kind of disagree with that.?

Keiser said people should be responsible for their own expenses, despite their financial background.

?We should be focusing on decreasing the prices of schools rather than trying to help people pay for them,? said Lejla Huskic, a College of Arts and Sciences sophomore. ?It?s putting a band-aid on the wound before disinfecting. [It] won?t do anything but trap the disease, and it?ll burst eventually.?

People who have the means should continue to pay their loan bill, she said.

?You should pay a larger percentage based on how much money you make,? Huskic said. ?This way, regardless of class, you?re able to pay what you can afford.?

5 things that could sink Windows 8

6 hrs.

The Windows?8 launch is finally upon us, and I guarantee you there are a lot of nervous people in Redmond right now. How could they not be?

You?re about to launch a new version of your operating system that is such a radical departure from what PC users have come to expect that it should be called "Windows We Hope You?re Ready for Something Really Different." Sheer inertia is certainly a concern. After all, the Live Tiles, panoramic Modern-style interface and new tools like the Charms menu all require a learning curve. But that?s not the biggest challenge Microsoft?faces. These are.

1. Hardware is too pricey
One of the biggest reasons ultrabooks haven?t sold as well as Intel and its partners expected is that prices haven?t come down fast enough. You can finally find some in the $699 range, but that?s still about $200 more than the typical budget laptop.

Now, shoppers will be asked to pony up $1,100 to $1,200 to enjoy touch-based convertibles like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, Sony VAIO Duo 11 and Dell XPS 12. Intel shared with us recently that its own studies show that consumers are willing to pay $150 to $200 more for touch, but I?m not sure that will fly in a down economy and a holiday season dominated by the cheap iPad mini, Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

Windows RT devices like Microsoft?s Surface are more affordable at $499, the same as the iPad. But opting for the Touch Cover keyboard (the accessory being touted in Microsoft?s ads) brings the price to $599.

Windows 8-powered hybrids like the $749 Acer Iconia W510 (with keyboard) and Samsung Ativ Smart PC 500T (I swear I?m not making that name up) don?t have the same sexy industrial design as the Surface, but their Atom processors make these devices more versatile because users can run traditional desktop apps. You can get the W510 without a keyboard for a reasonable $499.

[MORE: Top 10 Windows 8 Hybrids]

2. Windows 8 vs. Windows RT confusion
Shoppers will have a tough time telling the difference between the two flavors of new Windows devices on shelves this holiday season, because they both feature the same slick Live Tile interface. But there is a huge difference between the two platforms.

In a nutshell, Windows 8 PCs can run any app downloaded from the Windows Store as well as all desktop applications. Windows RT tablets and hybrids (powered by ARM processors) will be limited to Windows Store apps and Microsoft?s Office 2013, even though you?ll still be able to access the desktop for things like transferring files?off a USB drive.

Sounds like a pretty simple delineation, but as The Verge proved with some undercover testing, Microsoft?s own store employees don?t know the difference between the two operating systems. Microsoft responded to this eye-opening report by saying that all of its sales reps will receive 15 hours of training before launch. The clock is ticking.

[MORE: 8 Windows 8 Annoyances and How to Fix Them]

3. Not enough apps
At last count there were nearly 3,500 apps in the Windows Store. And while there are a handful of compelling options so far, there are a lot more holes in Microsoft?s lineup than I would expect at this late stage. Where is Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Dropbox? Angry Birds??

The good news: Microsoft will unveil plenty of high-profile apps either at the launch of its OS or shortly thereafter, hopefully filling in a fair number of these holes. But I still have serious concerns about the breadth of options that will be available. After all, Apple has 250,000 apps just for the iPad, thanks to its huge head start.

Microsoft also needs to prove that Windows 8 is a viable gaming platform and not just rest on the Xbox name, as it has done with Windows Phone. Shoppers need to see console-quality eye candy along with casual fare. I?m encouraged by the fact that the Unreal Engine III has been ported to Windows 8, however, which should help lead to Infinity Blade-style titles in the Windows Store. Titles based on the Unity engine will come after launch.

[MORE: Top 20 Windows 8 Apps]

4. Crappy touchpads
Sure, Windows 8 works best with touch, but the sweet spot for most shoppers right now is $500 clamshell designs that rely on touchpads. Based on previous experience, I?m very worried that these pointing devices won?t deliver the smooth gesture support that will add up to a good user experience. On a lot of pre-production samples I?ve tried the touchpad didn?t always respond when I swiped in from the left to switch apps. And most of them didn?t support the gesture to move in from the left and quickly back to the right to see all of your open apps.

If notebook vendors can?t make pinch-to- zoom work well or two-finger scrolling, they?ll have an even harder time getting Windows 8 gestures to work reliably. I?m really hoping Synaptics, Microsoft and OEMs get it right, but it will probably take a while.

[MORE: Crappy Touchpads Could Kill the Ultrabook]

5. Macs on the rise
Microsoft shouldn?t just be concerned about the iPad and the rumored "iPad Mini." It should take note that Apple is now No. 1 in notebook sales in the U.S. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is consistently the top seller at retail, and all you need to do is peek inside any coffee shop to see a sea of MacBook Airs. I?ve said this before, but the Mac's?OS X?Mountain Lion could prove more attractive than Windows 8?to those looking for a more traditional operating system this holiday, especially for those who own other Apple devices and like the idea of having iCloud keeping everything in sync.

[MORE:?10 Reasons to Drop Windows for Mountain Lion]

Bottom line
Microsoft is reportedly spending $1.5 billion to launch and promote Windows 8, and the company has never been under more pressure to make sure that shoppers get the message. But what is that message? Is it that you can have your cake and eat it too with a Windows 8 PC that runs mobile and ?legacy? apps? That you can get all-day battery life, iPad-like portability and Office productivity with a Windows RT device? It?s actually all of the above, which is a big part of the challenge.

Although Microsoft?having a hero device like the Surface tablet?helps, Windows 8 will succeed or fail not based on how well the Surface fares. Just as with every other Windows launch, Microsoft will once again rely on an ecosystem of app developers and hardware?makers to make its software sing. All of the above five obstacles are not insurmountable, but they?re very real.

11. If Gov. Mitt Romney called you to ask your opinion and advice on his foreign policy debate tomorrow night, what would you tell him he needs to do to beat the president?

Just be yourself. One of the most obvious problems the current president has is that he's a phony through and through. I think Gov. Romney's honesty and integrity stands out in stark contrast, and I believe that's why the polls are turning now that the people are actually seeing him in the debates without the MSM filter.

Tow - My own granddaughter will graduate next Spring with a Masters in nursing. MOST nurses I've encountered have been pretty good, but I've also met a few stinkers. My cardiologist is Pakistani and has taken EXCELLENT care of me since my 2003 heart attack. My heart function has steadily improved under his care. He got his medical degree in India. I didn't choose him. He just happened to be in the hospital when the ambulance delivered me that morning, but I've stuck with him.

1. Card game or board game?
card games

2. Rock ?n? roll or country?
Rock & Roll, pre-1969--most of it after that was (and is) simply awful.

3. sneakers or sandals?
Sneakers...most of the time

4. Shopping or movies?
I don't like shopping but I NEVER go to movies (almost never), so if I have to choose, I guess shopping.

5. Lake or pool?
Either one as long as it's wet!

6. Juice or milk?
I drink a LOT more milk than juice.

7. Tent or hotel?
I can "rough it" with about anyone, but when I go to sleep, I want a BED...so hotel.

8. Popcorn or candy?
I eat very little candy, so popcorn, I guess.

9. Merry go round or roller coaster?
Rollercoaster.

10. Soup or salad?
Don't much like rabbit food, so soup, I suppose.

11. If Gov. Mitt Romney called you to ask your opinion and advice on his foreign policy debate tomorrow night, what would you tell him he needs to do to beat the president?
Not that he would, of course, but I think I'd be inclined to tell him to HAMMER his opponent on how diminished our standing in the world has become since he was elected. Most places, we're a laughingstock.

2. Rock ?n? roll or country?
Rock & Roll. Why do country singers all sing through their noses? Why do the lyrics always concentrate on proving how country they really are?

3. Sneakers or sandals?
Sneakers

4. Shopping or movies?
Oh jeez, do I have to? Movies, I guess.

5. Lake or pool?
Lake

6. Juice or milk?
Juice

7. Tent or hotel?
Hotel

8. Popcorn or candy?
Popcorn.

9. Merry go round or roller coaster?
Roller Coaster

10. Soup or salad?
Salad

11. If Gov. Mitt Romney called you to ask your opinion and advice on his foreign policy debate tomorrow night, what would you tell him he needs to do to beat the president?
Well, I would certainly be surprised if he called, however, here's what I would like to see happen:
When he lies, call him on it. When he interrupts treat him like a child and call him on it. When he gives an answer that has little or nothing to do with the question call him on it and demand an answer. When he calls you a liar get right in his face and demand an apology. He really does have the personality of a child so treat him that way. Nothing upsets a kid more than being treated like a kid. Nothing upsets me more than having a kid as President.
Finally, and it's OK if you do this more than once, let the whole world know that the exceptional country known as The United States of America is getting back in the game. We will not apologize for our wealth or our strength. Tell our friends that they can, once again, count on our support. Tell our enemies, and those who support them, that the time of hurting us with impunity is over. Tell those who want to come here that we welcome immigrants who wish to become citizens and add something positive to the mix. Tell them that our Constitution is inviolate and we will not bend the laws of this country in order to accommodate their worldview.

1. Card game or board game? Board game.

2. Rock ?n? roll or country? Rock ... don't care much for country (which frustrates me, as many country artists are decent family people and patriotic Americans, while many rock artists are multilevel jerks, putting it nicely)

3. Sneakers or sandals? Sandals. In my theology, if God intended for man to wear shoes, man would have built-in shoelaces!

4. Shopping or movies? Movies

5. Lake or pool? Pool

6. Juice or milk? Juice

7. Tent or hotel? Hotel

8. Popcorn or candy? Yes? Both? Well, I do prefer candy usually.

9. Merry go round or roller coaster? Not big on either.

10. Soup or salad? Yes? Both? I like either approximately equally, so my choice would be situational - my mood, the specific available choices.

11. If Gov. Mitt Romney called you to ask your opinion and advice on his foreign policy debate tomorrow night, what would you tell him he needs to do to beat the president? Hit Pres. Obama 3 ways: Hard; Fast; Continuously. As some one on PJMedia phrased it, Mr. Obama is clothes without an emperor.

Sad to hear of Sen. McGovern's death. I had heard last week that he was under hospice care and then that he was unresponsive. Didn't agree much with his politics, but at a human level his death is at once a relief and a loss for his family and friends. I hope they didn't wait until last week to get him into hospice care, and I hope they have counseling resources available to them if needed.

Becky has worked for a local hospice organization for over a year, and volunteered there for about a year before that, so I'm learning what such organizations do through talking about what she does at work.

Today?s Sunday Questions: - - - With some answers.

1. Card game or board game?- Board Game, preferably chess.

2. Rock ?n? roll or country? - Neither as I will turn the electronic gadget off before listening to either since I feel the sound of tires singing on the pavement is more pleasing.

3. Sneakers or sandals? - Here again is a case of neither. I don?t have a pair of either in my closet.

4. Shopping or movies? - I don?t like shopping but do it as a necessity. Have not been to a movie in more than 25 years

5. Lake or pool? - Prefer a pool to a lake.

6. Juice or milk? - Gimme my unsweetened grapefruit juice, please.

7. Tent or hotel? - Hotel now as I have had enough ?roughing it.?

8. Popcorn or candy? - Depends a little on what I am doing but in general I prefer candy to popcorn.

9. Merry go round or roller coaster? - I?ll go with the merry-go-round.

10. Soup or salad? - Soup if you please.

11. If Gov. Mitt Romney called you to ask your opinion and advice on his foreign policy debate tomorrow night, what would you tell him he needs to do to beat the president? - Not gonna happen of course but if it did I would suggest mentioning the original routine of the President apologizing because the USofA has been a sucessful nation based on our form of government and hard work. The list is long.

4. Shopping or movies?

Neither - HATE shopping with a passion and am not a movie person.

5. Lake or pool?

9. Merry go round or roller coaster?

Soup - especially broccoli and cheese soup

11. If Gov. Mitt Romney called you to ask your opinion and advice on his foreign policy debate tomorrow night, what would you tell him he needs to do to beat the president?

Harp on the mess the Middle East is in today and our allegience to the Muslim Brotherhood given their violent and terroristic beliefs instead of backing our only ally in the area, Israel.

Ray - I know lots of people like Jelly Bellys. President Reagan did, for one. I never could get used to the odd flavors that'd pop up from time to time...like Japaleno CANDY? For a treat, see if you can find some "LIFE SAVERS JELLY BEANS" you should buy a package! They're kind of hard to find around here sometimes, but they are the best in flavor I've ever found. Also, thanks for the reminder about V-8. I LOVE the stuff too, but didn't think of it when I was answering the questions. Of course, I drink lots of 2% milk. We buy it by the gallon around here because our daughter likes it, too.

One of the funniest things I ever did involved sandals. I was a detective in 1969 and our chief of police was an EXTREMELY conservative dresser...a Democrat, by the way. He always wore somewhat baggy, blue, pin-striped suits, a Bradford silverbelly western hat and, because of a circulation problem, polished leather houseshoes. I was going to college in the mornings at that time and my wife would buy me what she thought were "suitable" clothes for campus wear. I got called out of class one morning and was told to report to the chief ASAP because we'd had an early-AM murder he wanted me on. I showed up at his office dressed in a pair of red, white & blue, vertical striped, hip-hugger-type bellbottoms with exposed-button fly, a solid blue shirt with a wide collar and somewhat "blousy" sleeves, a 2"-wide belt with an abstract metal buckle and Ho Chi Minh sandals! I thought the chief was going to stroke out right there! He sent me home to "change into something more befitting your job." The following month, I got another, similar call and went home first and changed into a somewhat baggy, blue pin-striped suit, leather houseshoes and a Bradford, silverbelly western hat. I thought he was going to stroke out AGAIN! There was just no satisfying that guy!
