Pricing Plans Revealed for Google Fiber in Provo

Less than a month after finalizing its Google Fiber deal with the City of Provo, Google this week provided more details about the project - including pricing plans.

Google revealed three initial plans, available at sign-up. For $70 per month, residents can get Gigabit Internet, which provides Internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps download and upload. Gigabit Internet + TV will cost $120 per month and provide gigabit Internet plus high-definition cable channels, with the ability to record up to eight shows at once and store up to 500 hours of HD content.

If that's too pricey, Google will also offer free Internet access at speeds up to 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload for at least the next seven years.

Each plan requires a one-time, $30 construction fee, paid by single-family homeowners at the time of sign-up, or by property managers when they sign an agreement to wire an entire building.

Between now and October, Google will be focused on a few key areas of work, with the goal of getting its first Google Fiber customers hooked up in the Utah town before the end of the year.

"First ? and many might argue, most importantly ? we're working to upgrade the existing fiber network in Provo to be Gigabit-ready," Google Fiber's director of business operations, Michael Slinger, said in a blog post.

The company will also talk with property managers and the owners of large apartment buildings and condominiums to help plan for the future. Installing Google Fiber in buildings with five or more units takes a lot of time, Slinger said, encouraging landlords to get in touch with Google.

In rolling out Google Fiber in Provo, Google purchased iProvo, a city-owned fiber-optic network currently owned by Veracity Communications. Current Veracity customers in single-family homes will see no changes, Slinger said, but will have the opportunity later this year to switch to Google Fiber.

Provo residents wishing to keep up with Google news can sign up online for the Fiber newsletter.

Google Fiber is already installed in the Kansas City area, and will also roll out to Austin, Texas customers beginning next summer.

IBM beefs up fraud prevention portfolio by buying Israel?s Trusteer

IBM plans to buy an Israeli security firm called Trusteer, which specializes in fraud prevention software for the financial industry. It will use the purchase to create a new cybersecurity lab in Israel, in addition to the research and development facilities it already has there.

Online fraud prevention is serious business these days ? Easy Solutions picked up $11 million in funding to go further down this avenue just a few months ago. Trusteer, which has offices in Tel Aviv and Boston, serves a huge number of banks from around the world, including Bank of America and HSBC, as well as other firms with a financial angle, such as PayPal.

Trusteer?s web-based products are designed to detect malware and fraudulent account hijackings, while the company also provides enterprise endpoint security services and tools for securing mobile apps. It should be noted that IBM already offers fraud prevention products ? this portfolio should now be strengthened particularly in the areas of web fraud, mobile transaction security and security-as-a-service.

According to a statement on Thursday, IBM?s new Israeli cybersecurity lab will comprise a couple of hundred IBM and Trusteer researchers who will focus on ?advanced threat, malware, counter-fraud, financial crimes and mobile security solutions.?

The value of the transaction has not been disclosed, but TechCrunch quotes Israeli outlet Calcalist as saying it?s somewhere between $800 million and $1 billion.

I'm Joe Navarro, and This Is How I Work

Joe Navarro joined the FBI when he was just 23 years old. Over the next 25 years there working in counterintelligence and counterterrorism, Joe became an expert on human behavior and non-verbal communication. (We featured his thoughts on body language and lie detecting during last year's Spy Week.) Though he retired from the FBI a decade ago, Joe continues to write (his bestseller What Every Body is Saying has been published in 27 languages) and lecture around the world. We caught up with the fascinating Mr. Navarro to talk about books, workspaces, and more.

Location: Tampa, FL
Current gig: Writing books, lecturing, and blogging at Spycatcher for Psychology Today
Current mobile device: iPhone 4S
Current computer: Macbook Air
One word that best describes how you work: Furiously

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Twitter. It allows me to connect with people all over the world. They give immediate feedback on anything I write and they let me know what they like or don't. They can be very supportive and give guidance when you're trying to get help?ask a question and you will get scores of people who want to help. Want to know where to eat in Bogota? Three people will answer that. They can also tell you what they find interesting about your writing or not?for instance, I had several tell me they want me to write more fiction.

The only other apps I use are by Delta and US Airways because I'm constantly traveling and they're good for updates. Dragonspeak I like because I can dictate notes.

What's your workspace like?

I have an area of the house carved out that's an office, and that's all I use it for. It's where I do research, invite guests, and do all my writing. I allow myself music in the room, but no TV as I don't want to be distracted. Writing is hard for me and I can't afford distractions. I use a stand-up desk from Scan Design, which helps my back. I work there 8-10 hours a day.

Pictured above: Joe's standing desk.

What's your best time-saving trick?

Email in the morning, research in the afternoon, write late in the evening when all is quiet.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

A Pelikan fountain pen and 3x5 lined notecards (my BYU professor Stephen Covey instilled that in my back in 1971). I use Moleskine journals in various sizes to keep observations and outline my books.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

My Kindle. Now when I go on vacation I can read seven or eight books without having to carry them. A digital recorder?when I'm too lazy to write I take digital notes. Siri makes my appointments and reminds me with metronomic efficiency.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

Vacuuming. It relaxes me, as does grilling salmon steaks on the BBQ. Also reading?I usually read one or two books per week.

What are you currently reading?

Usually about three books at a time. This week it's The Generals by Thomas E. Ricks, God's Equation by Amir Aczel, Blood Rites by Barbara Ehrenreich, and The Aleppo Codex by Matti Friedman (a must read).

What do you listen to while you work?

GotRadio's Guitar Genius, NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk, and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!.

Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

I'm a high end introvert and prefer quiet, small groups. Giving presentations is exhausting to me as are parties. Yes, I am boring.

I'm Joe Navarro, and This Is How I Work

Pictured above: Joe in the classroom.

What's your sleep routine like?

I stay up until 1am writing or reading and I'm up by 7. If I'm on a deadline then it's a "luxurious" 6am or earlier, until 1am. Of course there's always time for a nap.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Read as much as you can on all sorts of topics. Set no limits for what interests you, no matter how far or wide. Ignore convention and write on the margins?it will help you remember information. Every book I have has writing on the margins.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Most everything I've learned about business, I learned from watching my parents and how they interact with others. Attitude, attention to detail, service to others, taking care of things quickly, and making others comfortable?that's all you really need to know. Sacrifice by studying early in life so you won't have to sacrifice later.

The How I Work series asks heroes, experts, and flat-out productive people to share their shortcuts, workspaces, routines, and more. Every Wednesday we'll feature a new guest and the gadgets, apps, tips, and tricks that keep them going. Have someone you want to see featured, or questions you think we should ask? Email Tessa.

Former Ill. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. to be sentenced

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is ashamed of his conduct and accepts responsibility, his lawyer told the federal judge who was deciding the sentences Wednesday for the Illinois ex-congressman and his wife for misusing $750,000 in campaign money on splurges from a gold-plated Rolex watch and mink capes to vacations and mounted elk heads.

Jackson's lawyer, Reid Weingarten, told the judge that his client is "a very special guy" who can be charming and kind and whose behavior reflected mental illness. "He immediately wanted to come to terms with the conduct and did," Weingarten said.

The 48-year-old son of civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson was expected to step before the judge at the hearing to make a statement, a moment defendants typically use to apologize or ask for mercy. An emotional Jackson held back tears earlier this year when he entered a guilty plea to conspiring to defraud his campaign.

Citing the brazenness of his illegal spending, prosecutors are recommending a four-year prison term for the Chicago Democrat once seen as a possible candidate for U.S. president. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ? who is not related to the defendants ? could give him as little as probation or impose the maximum five-year prison term.

Sandra Jackson, 49, a former Chicago alderman, pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns, and prosecutors are seeking 18-month sentence for her crimes. But as a concession, they have asked that the couple's sentences be staggered so one Jackson would be free to care for their two children while the other is behind bars.

In letters to the court prior to Wednesday's sentencing in Washington, the former congressman's family urged the judge to go easy on him, blaming much of his bad behavior on his recent diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

"I appeal to you for mercy," Jackson's father wrote in one letter. "Jesse Jr. is an example as a teacher and counselor who will be better served under supervision and probation."

Jackson's mom, Jacqueline Jackson, describes becoming aware of her son's unraveling a year ago, just before he disappeared from public view. Months later, he resigned his House seat.

"(I) found my son grossly underweight and in poor health," she writes. "When I took him to his Capitol Hill office to prepare for (a) vote, the office was in total disarray, which was most unusual for my son."

Weingarten said the younger Jackson has been under a microscope for his entire life and had enormous expectations placed upon him from the time he was born.

But prosecutors dismiss the notion that Jackson's bipolar disorder explains his misdeeds.

There is no proof his mood swings had any bearing on the "3,100 illegal transactions that occurred during the life of the conspiracy," they say in one filing.

They also noted his apparent greed. The combined annual salaries of Jackson and his wife were more than $300,000 during much of the time they were burning through donors' money.

Prosecutors took particular umbrage at defense claims that Jackson's crimes were ultimately victimless. Jackson betrayed voters, they told the judge, and he undermined the democratic process by shaking public confidence in the nation's campaign-finance system.
